History and culture

The Porto Customs House is a combination of history and culture. It´s a significant part of the history of the city, World Heritage Site by Unesco, and an example of knowledge and culture. Designed by the French architect Jean François Colson, it is unique, due to its magnificence upon the Douro River. Confirmed by the originality of its interior spaces, the mysterious ambience of “furnas” and its luminous and large halls. It surprises because it was built to control the circulation of goods and products and is now perfect for its actual purpose.

The exhibitions that occupy part of its space are an invitation to discover the customs activity, the transportation of the Portuguese Presidents since the beginning of the twentieth century, and the importance and complexity of human communication. Exhibitions that indicate the collective memory as a city and country that strengthen the identity and values of who we are.

Entering the customs building, roaming its halls, visiting the existing exhibitions and appreciating the simmering river through its large windows is, on its own, culture and knowledge.

The building and its cultural spaces invite all that have an open spirit, that want to feel, know and discover more of what we are as people, city and country.
